American Crime Story: Impeachment Premieres

Those of us old enough to remember Lewinskygate and the Clinton impeachment might be surprised that it happened over two decades — or two impeachments — ago.

But time has given us a new perspective on the scandal that rocked our nation and the Clinton White House, and Ryan Murphy, the producer behind series such as Glee, Nip/Tuck, and American Horror Story, has decided to take a new look at the case from the perspective of three women at the heart of it — Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, and Paula Jones.

The last two entries in the American Crime Story — the first following the OJ Simpson case and the second taking a look at the assassination of Gianni Versace — have been major hits, winning lots of Emmys and getting critical raves. So we here at Orion Expert Network (OEN) will be watching the series — which saw the conservative legal movement utilize the legal process to assault the Clinton presidency — with great interest.

The series premiered on Tuesday, and covered the suicide of Vince Foster, who was a lawyer in the Clinton White House and a friend of the couple’s from their days in Arkansas; Tripp’s (who was his secretary) transfer to the Pentagon, which set her off and made her determined to seek revenge; and Tripp’s meetings with Lucianne Goldberg (a literary agent) about writing a book about her time in the White House; and Tripp’s meeting with Monica Lewinsky, who had been a White House intern and had also been transferred to the Pentagon.

Whitewater, which was a controversy involving some investments the Clintons had made in Arkansas, allowed for the creation of a special counsel, Kenneth Starr, who then used his position to launch a fishing expedition into the Clintons, examining every aspect of their lives and hoping to get President Clinton under oath. It was a firm belief of the conservative legal movement that Clinton was a liar and that if he was put under oath he would lie. And he did.

The rest is history — and we’ll be covering it in other posts as the season continues. It is worth noting that many of the most recognizable names from the Trump years cut their teeth on the Clinton impeachment — Brett Kavanaugh and George Conway among them. So the series brings a perspective on how this conservative legal movement was able to succeed in stymying the Democrats’ agenda and also packing the Supreme Court with conservatives.

Although impeachment is technically a trial, which is initiated in the House and then heard and voted on in the Senate, it is mostly a political process.
